I usually post my yearly Jack-O-Lantern picks but this year we waited too long to get our pumpkins and some of the ones we got were not of the highest quality. I had to carve mine with my dremel tool because I couldn't get a knife to go through it. It ended up being very elementary. But it was still fun.

Well we did it! We found a new house. When we jumped into the whole moving thing I was scared it wouldn't work out before school started in the fall of '09. After all, school, and the new boundary lines, were what prompted the move. Here it is April and we've found both a buyer for our current house, and an awesome new house. The Lord has answered many prayers! Yesterday morning we were about to head out to go look at potential new houses. Tanner was at a friends and I called to see if he wanted to go looking with us. He just wanted to stay at his friends so we just planned our day without him. About 20 minutes later the friends mom called to tell me the boys were messing around with some golf clubs and the friend had hit Tanner in the face with a club and put some cuts in his face that would probably need stitches. It didn't end up being as bad as I had feared but it did need some Dermabond. We finished up at the minor emergency clinic, which just so happened to be down the street from the house we were planning on looking at, and it was about 5 minutes until we had been scheduled to be there. So we made our appointment, and Tanner ended up seeing what would be his new home. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

I just realized that with the change of presidents, my streak of seeing the current president in person has come to an end. It wasn't much of a streak, I saw George Bush Sr and Bill Clinton, but never W. Senior was campaigning and I saw him at OC. And once I was in DC and standing outside the back fence of the white house and saw Clinton jogging. But I never had the opportunity to see George Jr. So, the streak ends at two.

A history of horrible birthdays

Over the course of the last few days, my birthday has reminded me of the difference between my life now and my life one year ago. It's not a monumental difference, but last year on my birthday I found out I was going to be outsourced. Not great news, especially on what is supposed to be a happy day. That triggered a memory of another bad birthday. I was around 12 or so, and I was sick on my birthday. My mom made me a chocolate cake, but after blowing out the candles I declined a piece because I didn't feel up to eating anything. That continued for a few days. Finally I was feeling better and was looking forward to eating some cake. What's that you say...it's all gone? Ah man.

OK two bad birthdays doesn't really qualify for "A history of horrible birthdays" but that title was catchy.

Do you have a high-speed internet router....one of those wonderful devices that lets you access the internet at home from your laptop without being tied down to the desk? We do. It's a Linksys wrt54g. I got it for my birthday about 3 or 4 years ago, and have loved the thing. Ironically on my birthday this year it decided it didn't want to work anymore. You could see its configuration web page, it would give you an IP address...but it wouldn't hook you up to the internet. For some reason it wasn't getting an IP from the cable modem. I figured I could flash the firmware with the same or even a newer version and it would return to normal. Didn't work. Then I thought I would try an older version. Well that pretty much killed it. When you went to the configuration page, it was there, but it was all messed up. And that killed the link to the page that let you flash the firmware. But, being the super genius that I am, I looked through my internet history,found what the flash update page was, and went to it. Like the main configuration page, it didn't display correctly, but it DID come up. So having some faith and looking at the source for the page that did come up, I worked my way through all the form fields, built my own web page, and was able to flash it again. But this time I didn't use the Linksys firmware. I used an open-source firmware called "Tomato". And it immediately got an IP, hooked up to the internet, and I was online. And today was the first day I had plans to work from home and I had horrible visions of being tied down in my office all day instead of working from the couch, the back porch, the bar, the kitchen table etc. So I'm happy. Now, back to work.

Oh wait...this isn't a tech blog. Sorry.

It's my lunch hour and I'm bored so I was looking over old posts in my blog. I can't believe it's already been 2 years since we bought our current van. I wish it still looked that nice. It's usually always dirty and about a year ago someone put a big ding in the right front wheel well. And then this summer I opened the passenger door and slammed it into this wooden sign so now there's a big white smudge on it that I cant get out. We were hoping to keep this car for a very long time but at this rate it's going to be pretty ugly in no time.

I'm planning on putting up Christmas lights this weekend so be sure and look for pictures of the house. Or you could just go back and look at the posts for the last couple years because it looks exactly the same every year. OK that's not really a picture of my house. If only I was that lucky.

Did you? I'm a little ashamed to admit it but I had never voted for anything before, ever. I wasn't even registered until about 3 or 4 months ago. Every election is important but this one just seems to have such a greater impact on our country so I felt I should do my part. I got to my polling place at 6:45 and there were already about 150 people waiting ahead of me. I think I stood in line for roughly an hour before I got my turn. It wasn't that bad, and I would have waited longer if I needed to (although not much, nature was calling). Now we just sit back and see what happens, although I think most of the country already nows.

That's what I have right now. In fact everyone in our house has it, though the kids aren't as bad as Deborah and I. And thankfully so since they start school tomorrow. I usually try fighting off a cold with about 2 gallons of orange juice. Since Saturday I've consumed 1, 1 gallon jug of Minute Maid pulp free orange juice, about half can of Minute Maid pulp free orange juice from concentrate, and 2 of the single serving bottles, however big those are, 12 ounces or whatever. And I don't feel any better. So now, I'm drinking this. Its horrible. I'm not a drinker. I never have been, and I never will be. But I'm willing to have a little Crown Royal if its going to get rid of my cold. So far I'm not feeling any better. Maybe I should make it a double. And then I think I'll operate some heavy machinery. PARTY!

Embarrassing Moment

I just remembered an embarrassing moment from many many years ago. I'm not sure what triggered the memory, maybe the rain.
I was 16 and had the pleasure of driving myself to church one Sunday evening in the summer...in my dads old station wagon. (No that's not the embarrassing moment, I drove it all the time. My friends dubbed it 'the party wagon') There were some visitors at church that night, one being a girl my age that I thought was pretty cute. After church me and my buddies stealthily followed them to see where they lived. We were lead to an apartment complex not too far from my parents house. We didn't stop but did come back later, performing the typical teen "drive-by-the-cute-persons-house". Cute girl was outside, with her sisters, and her friends. She recognized us, waved at us so we stopped to meet her. We had only been there a few minutes and it started to rain. My buddies and I piled back into the party wagon, drove out of the parking lot, turned right, spun out in the rain, and ended up in the apartment complex lawn. Not a good first impression. I never saw any of those girls again.

Deborah and I took Zane to see Wall-E today. It was pretty good but it was a bit more serious than most Disney-Pixar movies. The movie had 2 very prominent themes at the root of the storyline. One was that we need to take better care of our planet and reduce our amount of waste. The second was that we need to take better care of our bodies and exercise and eat right. Deborah and I discussed it over lunch at McDonald's.

I think I might have a food allergy. Oddly enough, it seems to be related to how much I eat rather than what I eat. Because of stress over my job situation over the last 6 months, and well just the fact that I like to eat, I've been consuming more food than I had been. Apparently this has triggered some sort of allergy because my body seems to be more swollen lately. It's really weird.

Well it is official. I no longer work for Hertz. I worked there for 10 years and 2 months. Up until the last 2 years or so I always saw myself retiring there. It just wasn't meant to be I guess. I made the best friends I've ever had while I was there, and I'm really going to miss them. Monday I start a new chapter in my life at a new job. Hopefully this chapter is as good as the last (at least until that end part where I quit).

Well it's no secret anymore so I guess I'll post it here. After 10+ years working for the same place, I've decided to move on. I've been offered a job working elsewhere and I've accepted. It's strange timing and the logistics are odd, but I had to give a 1 month notice. I wont bother with the details right now though. So full-time job number 4 begins April 28th.

In more exciting news, we got a Wii (finally). It's the coolest thing I've ever owned. I love it and might possibly be addicted. But my right arm and shoulder are very sore. If you know me, send me your console id so our Mii's can "Miingle". You have to be connected to the internet for this to work though. Oh and I bought the internet channel so I can surf the web through my Wii. Its awesome.

Burning Down the House

That title might be a bit of an exaggeration. Saturday I was in my garage and I kept smelling this odd strong smell of plastic. Later that afteroon Deborah came in the house from some shopping and said the garage door wouldn't go down. We both went out and looked, I played with the sensors a little, and told her to try it again. She says "hey look there's smoke coming out of the garage door opener". Sure enough there was. I took the cover off the opener so I could look up at it and think "wow, look at all the shiny parts. I wonder what they do" and then had Deborah hit the button again. This time we saw some pretty sparks. Lots of them. And I noticed that the big circuit board had a hole burned right through it. With my vast knowledge of garage door openers I came to the following conclusion: "I think its broke". Growing up we never had a garage door opener (well we did, and its name was Scott) so I figured a few days of opening the door by hand wouldn't kill us. Problem 1 though is that while unlike many new homes, we do actually have a lock on our garage door, but we dont have a key for it. So we wouldn't be able to unlock it without going through the house and into the garage. That just takes too long. And problem 2, apparently todays garage doors aren't intended to take the punishment of opening them by hand. Most only have one spring these days (I've learned that a good garage door has 2 springs, one on each side but todays builders are too cheap) and if you open them by lifting on the side without the spring, they get crooked. And then the cable unwinds. And then instead of watching "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" after church on Sunday night, you're on a stepladder trying to figure out how to lift a crooked door, and how to wind a garage door cable back into its spool. I went another route, I just unhooked the cables and let the door go down...really fast. Oops. No damage done though. Two days later and I became the proud owner of an Overhead Door Legacy garage door opener. It's a premium chain drive opener that features a patented motor for greater lifting force, rugged full-chain drive and solid-steel T-rail for long-lasting performance. And its $100 cheaper than the opener the first guy I called had. Happy Valentine's Day.

Valentines Help

Ok men, here's an idea for Valentines day. I'm not talking about the expensive gifts, the elegant dinner, the dozen roses, anyone can do that, if you have the money. I'm talking about the little extras. Last year I just went out and bought a box of valentines like the kids give out at school. The kind you punch out and fold over and close with a sticker. I wrote sweet messages to my wife in each one, and then hid them everywhere I thought she would look. I put one in her purse, one in her coat pocket, one on the steering wheel of her car. I taped one to the orange juice bottle, one to the bathroom mirror. There were about 30 in all. She loved it. And I'm sharing this with you, because this year I cant think of anything to rival it and I need some help. Last year I basically set myself up for failure this year. I'm not that creative. I had one good idea and its been used. So, any ideas?

Pops 2

We went back to Pops this afternoon. This experience wasn't quite as great as last time. For starters we had to wait for about an hour. What we thought would be an off time for dining, it wasn't. Last time we got there about 4:00 and got seated within about 5 minutes. Today we thought if we got there even earlier there might be no wait at all. We were wrong. That's fine, we knew we just got lucky last time, and its fun to look around at all the different pop they have. While waiting to be seated Tanner and I both noticed a table of ladies who were all eating the chicken fried steak. It looked so good. And thats where the rest of the problems started. We both ordered it. It was the worst chicken fried steak I have ever had. It was tough, it was chewy, and it had no flavor at all. Poor tanner had a big bite in his mouth that he couldn't bring himself to swallow. He chewed on it for about 5 minutes before it ended up in his napkin. At $10 a plate I couldn't bring myself to just let it go I went and talked to the manager. He was a super nice guy and didn't charge us for it. So really it turned out ok, other than Tanner and I not really getting to eat. But we ate enough sides to fill us up some. I'll still go back, but I'll never stray from the cheeseburger again.

They Found Him

We had an interesting night last night. About 6:45 I got a call from a parent of a student my son goes to middle school with. Apparently another student, one that rides my sons bus never made it home yesterday afternoon. They were calling us to see if my son remembered seeing this boy on the bus, and he did. They called back about 5 minutes later to ask some more questions. Then at 8:15 two police officers came to our door and talked to my son for a few minutes just seeing what he remembered on the bus, who the kid might have been sitting with, that type of thing. My son doesn't really even know this kid, just rides the bus with him. They told us that the kid answered his cell phone when the parents were looking for him, but wouldn't say where he was and hung up, then wouldn't answer any more. That put us at ease a little bit because it sounded like the kid just took off, rather than being abducted. But after they left, then a police helicopter flew over our neighborhood with its search light on for about 45 minutes. Anyway I just heard that they found the kid at some McDonalds this morning. I have no other details but I'm glad they have him back.

My birthday is this coming Wednesday, and being on a church night I decided to have my family birthday meal tonight instead of during the week. Deborah suggested Pops and I thought it was a great idea so that's where we ended up. The food was actually really good too. The menu is pretty limited, burgers, chicken fried steak, sandwiches etc. But the big draw is all the different selection of "pop". The walls are lined with different flavors of Jones soda but from what I deduced, those are only for display. Other than fountain drinks, your selection is limited to whats in the cooler, but its still a pretty big selection. Stuff I've never heard of. But I was really hoping for a big huge and strange selection of Jones sodas. I've heard horror stories of some of their weird flavors and I was hoping to try something like Peanut Butter and Jelly or something. There was supposedly a drink menu but I never saw it, so maybe there was more than what I saw in the cooler. Maybe I'll investigate more the next time I'm there. But overall it was a great experience and I'm definitely going back, and hopefully soon.

I just finished reading the Bible! The whole thing. One of my goals for 2007 was to follow a daily bible reading schedule. I've tried doing this for the last few years but got so far behind at times that I just couldn't make myself catch up. But this year I did it. I think the furthest behind I ever got was 5 days and that was just over this Christmas holiday. I started off with the NIV this year but Deborah reads the Message. About halfway through the year I started reading it too and have really grown to like it. I'm really proud of myself. For someone that calls himself a Christian I really dont know my bible very well so this was something I really felt I needed to do. And yesterday we bought a chronological bible and I plan on reading it in 2008.

New Neighbor

Well I just talked to my new neighbor. I'd met him once before but just a quick hello. He's about to graduate from college and is apparently a trust fund baby or something, and he paid cash for his house. Anyway, this time we had a nice little chat. Oh and its 3:30am. And about 20 minutes ago I was asleep. He and about 20 of his friends are having a little get together. And they're being really loud, and drinking, and using language I don't care to use. So as the man of the house and the father of 3 I have to maintain the peace. I kept telling myself before I went over to keep my cool. I forgot when I got there. But as I started talking I calmed myself. We agreed that if he just turned down the music and kept his friends in the house it would be OK. Not sure about the friends but so far he's not keeping up his end of the bargain about the music. If I went back with my kids in their PJ's crying because they couldn't sleep maybe that would help. Sorry for the break, I just had to go outside and tell them to shut up. Actually it looks like the party is breaking up. But as everyone exits the house they feel the need to stop on the driveway and talk really loud. And they have one of those driveways that is L shaped so it comes up further than a normal driveway. So its right by my kids bedroom windows. I hate playing the part of the grouchy old neighbor next door. Nobody wants to be that guy. I really hope this isn't a common occurrence. Oh and to add insult to injury every one of his friends has a nicer car than me. Oh and now I'm in trouble with the wife for typing too loud. I hope today gets better.

I guess after that I'll move up to MDAP and then HDAP. Then I'll go to Wrestlemania and take on Hulk Hogan. Well instead of writing this I guess I should go pack. I accomplished something pretty big this weekend. I was able to mark something off my list of "things to do before I die". I finally experienced the joy of a fried Twinkie. And ironically it will probably be one of the contributing factors to my death. It's a double-edged sword I guess. We went to the Oklahoma State Fair this weekend. I was quickly reminded why I hadn't been in 9 years. I suppose if the temperature hadn't been in the 90s, and I didn't have a very active 5 year old with me, and we'd been smart enough to bring a backpack to put all our free crap in, it probably would have been a better experience. But it killed a few hours and we ate some tasty stuff. We skipped all of the rides except for the big slide. That's a must for every fair visitor with little kids. The car show is always fun and it was really cool to see the Jeep Hurricane up close and personal. Shelbie and Zane got their picture taken with some Sea Lions. We went to Sea World this summer and didn't even get to do that, so that was an unexpected bonus. I guess really overall I'd say it was a good time. But, for all of you idiots that didn't think before just parking any 'ole place in the free parking area, I'm currently sending you some bad mojo. Here goes.....ok done. I'm sorry, but you had it coming. I saw quite a few cars that were pretty much SOL on getting out of the parking lot when they were ready because of how others had boxed them in.
